Notable Cases

United States v. Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean
Case No. EP-05-CR-856-KC

On March 8, 2006, a unanimous jury found former border patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean guilty of 6 counts and 8 counts respectively including, among other crimes, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault with Serious Bodily Injury, and Discharge of a Firearm relating to a Crime of Violence. On October 17, 2006, the former agents filed a motion for a new trial alleging jury misconduct, which the Court denied on October 25, 2006. The former agents were sentenced on October 19, 2006, and the Court granted the agents' request to remain free on bond pending designation by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. On January 16, 2007, the Court denied the agents' motion for bond pending appeal which was upheld by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on February 22, 2007. The former agents began serving their sentences on January 17, 2007.
